Teaching Opportunities
While the Pharmacology PhD Program has no formal requirement for teaching, there are several opportunities for students to gain teaching experience, if desired. Students, in their second to fifth year, have given lectures on specific subjects in:
- Introduction to Pharmacology – an elective course offered for MS students not majoring in Pharmacology
- Principles of Pharmacology – a core course for PhD & MS students in Pharmacology
- Graduate Pharmacology – a core course for PhD & MS students in Pharmacology
- Topics in Neuroscience: Diseases, Research, and Treatment – an elective course for MS and BS students across programs
Introduction to Pharmacology, in particular, is an excellent opportunity to gain mentored teaching experience. The course is faculty run, but taught predominantly by graduate students and postdocs. Each student is paired with a content expert on the faculty who provides feedback on lecture materials, exam questions, and lecture delivery.

Georgetown’s Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) runs an Apprenticeship in Teaching program for Ph.D. students. The Apprenticeship in Teaching (AT) program is designed to enhance the preparation of graduate students as teachers. The AT program offers graduate students the chance to participate in workshops and engage in authentic, teaching-related, typical faculty tasks with mentorship from current faculty and CNDLS professional teaching staff. These tasks are designed to give participants increased confidence and preparation for an academic position with teaching responsibilities.
