Major focus of my laboratory at the Department of Veterans Affair Medical Center, Washington DC is to understand the mechanism of Ca2+ signaling/transport in kidney and salivary gland epithelial cells using genetic, pharmacological, and translational approaches. Our long-term goal is to understand the implications of these mechanisms in calcium stone disease and biomineralization. Presently, we are utilizing a variety of approaches (such as biochemistry and molecular biology as well as physiology) to determine whether the TRPC sub-families of ion channel proteins are involved in regulating/mediating Ca2+ transport in these epithelial cells. Our research program can provide research training to the residents/students of Pharmacology, Otolaryngology and Renal Division. We are currently funded by NIH and NKF to continue the following projects. Project 1: Mechanism of Ca2+ transports in the kidney proximal tubule and its implication for calcium nephrolithiasis; funded by NKF. Project 2: Mechanisms of salivary ductal Ca2+ signaling and its role in stone formation; funded by NIH.
